Laminated glass is manufactured to offer both safety and security. Whereas annealed and toughened glasses will leave an aperture open after impact laminated glass cracks and crazes but remains in place offering security until replaced. There are two processes available to produce laminated glass. The first uses a PVB interlayer laminated to two sheets of glass under pressure. The second uses a resin, which is poured between the glass and sets after a short period bonding the glass to the resin. This second process allows the user to introduce new mediums to the finished product – the interlayer can be coloured permanently trapping the tint between the glass. Using PVB’s means that only certain flat patterned glasses can be laminated, using resin means any pattern can be transformed into a laminated safety glass Bromsgrove glass are currently experimenting with other mediums to achieve even greater visual effects whilst maintaining the principal of laminates i.e. safety.
